Why we favor segregation over integration?

For those who are concerned with human inclusion and societal integration, You must have seen and might be following the clashes that are happening in Spain and particularly in Catalonia in the past couple of days. The Catalan folks are favoring the independent. And the referendum is just about to be a reality. In order to understand the situation, one should study the complex underneath this problem and investigate the history behind it. Luckily, I've just arrived Madrid but actually for a different reason. I'm here to learn more about social entrepreneurship and explore the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the city. However, being here will give me the chance to see different perspectives on the whole situation.

Now I won't spit out any opinion commenting on the situation to say which camp is right and which is wrong. Nevertheless, I'd share with you an observation we should put into consideration. What is happening now in Spain should be viewed among a serial of social actions and reactions that have been changing the societal fabric and shaking the political spectrum in Europe since 2015. I'll list those in the following points and hopefully, I can have a revealing conversation soon. I want to talk with someone who can show me the interconnections between these profound historical moments.

1- Greek debt crises

2- Refugee influx

3- Brexit

4- Trump to be a president

5- The rise of Marine Le Pen in France

6- The rise of AfD in Germany

7- Catalonia referendum

The one common topic I can see, that stands out in all these occasions, was the call for 'separation' which was most of the time supported by the media. I'm really wondering why there are so many humans are pursuing separation rather integration and favoring segregation over inclusion? Why so many are still adapting the mindset of 'them' and 'us'? If we can find some reasonable answer to these questions, we might figure out some of the roots of the 'none sense' we have been dealing with in the past couple of years.
